“Today I was smoking a pork roast on 180 deg for a couple of hours. All of a sudden smoke started pouring out of the grill and pellet box. The pellet box got so hot you could not touch it and the temp gauge went to over 400 deg. It made a poping sound and the lid flew open like there was a small explosion in it. The grill is only 9 months old and I only use Traeger hickory pellets in it. About 20 minutes later it went back to operating normally. My wife and I are scared to use it again as it seems like a fire hazard. The pork roast survived, but it was too smokey tasting and ruined.
I would no longer recommend a Traeger, There are no service centers to take a defective grill like this to have it looked at under warranty to see if it is still safe to use. You will be stuck fixing it on your own even though it has been on fire. I was told it looked like the grill went out and filled itself with pellets and then somehow started again and burned all the pellets. The wires are all black and I am scared to use it. This is a safety hazard to me and someone could have been burned bad. A piece of junk at 9 months in my book.”
